Got an App Idea? You Don’t Need the App Store to Get Started

An app without the app store: a phone home screen with an install button and a smartwatch
In short

Your first app does not need the App Store. A web app installs from a link, works like an app, and can grow into store and smartwatch apps later if it is built on the right engine.

  • Install from a link: one tap on Android, which is 81% of South Africa
  • No store fees, no approval queue, changes live the moment you make them
  • Go to the stores when people search there or the app needs Bluetooth, tap-to-pay or background tracking
  • Build the engine once and every later version plugs into it

You have had the idea for a while. An app your customers use to book, order, track or pay. Or an app for your team, so the spreadsheets and WhatsApp groups can finally retire. Then someone told you what an app costs to build, and the idea went back in the drawer.

Here is the thing: your first app does not have to come from the App Store at all. It can be an app people install straight from a link on your website. It sits on their home screen with your icon and works like any other app. It costs a fraction of building two separate store apps, and built on the right foundation, it can grow into App Store, Play Store and even smartwatch apps later, without starting over.

An app, without the app store

It is a website built to look and work like an app. Your customer taps a link, chooses “Install” or “Add to Home Screen”, and your icon appears next to their other apps. It opens full screen, with no browser bar in sight.

The name, if you want it

Developers call this a PWA, short for progressive web app. You do not need to remember the name. Just remember that people can get it without visiting an app store. From here on, we will simply call it a web app.

A well-built web app can:

  • Keep working with no signal, then catch up when the connection is back
  • Send notifications to the phone, on Android and iPhone
  • Use the camera, location and photo uploads
  • Update the moment you make a change, with no waiting for Apple or Google to approve it

For your customers, it simply feels like an app. For you, it is one product instead of two.

Web app or app store app?

A web app wins on how fast you can launch, how many people you reach and what it costs to run. An app store app wins on being found in store searches and on deeper access to the phone itself.

When a web app is the smart first move

For most South African businesses launching their first app, a web app is the place to start.

  • 81%of mobile users in South Africa are on AndroidStatCounter, September 2026
  • 1 tapto install a web app on AndroidThree taps on iPhone, via Share
  • R0in store fees, and no approval queueChanges go live the moment you make them
Start with a web app when
  • Most of your customers are on Android Installing a web app takes one tap, and Android is 81% of South Africa.
  • Data and phone storage are precious No big store download, and no fighting for space on a budget phone.
  • You want to test the idea first Launch, see what people actually use, then invest more where it counts.
  • It is about booking, ordering, tracking, paying or managing Customer portals, loyalty cards, tools for staff on the road and office dashboards all run beautifully as web apps.
  • You want changes live today Fix a typo or add a feature, and everyone has it straight away.
  • Your team uses it at a desk too The same app works on a laptop, with no extra build.

When you do need the app stores

Sometimes an app store app is the right call, and that is fine.

Go to the stores when
  • People will look for you in the store If customers search the App Store for apps like yours, you need to be there.
  • It connects to gadgets Bluetooth devices, tap-to-pay, scanners and fitness wearables need full access to the phone.
  • It must keep working in the background Tracking a delivery route or counting steps with the screen off is still weak for web apps on iPhone.
  • Your users are mostly on iPhone and will not install from a link On iPhone, adding a web app to the home screen takes a few taps. A store download is more familiar.
One warning

Apple does not accept a website simply wrapped up to look like an app. It turns down apps that feel no different from browsing in Safari, so a store version needs real app features built in.

Build once, grow later

The secret is not the web app itself. It is the engine underneath it.

Every app has an engine: the database, the logins and the business rules. Build that engine properly, kept separate from the screens people tap on, and every new version simply plugs into it.

  1. Start with the web app Customers and staff use it from day one.
  2. Add store versions when the numbers say so The same app can be packaged for Google Play and the App Store, with phone features added so Apple accepts it. Most of the work is already done.
  3. Add a smartwatch app if it earns its place Watch apps are always built specially for the watch, but they are a small screen on top of the same engine: same logins, same data, same rules. That makes them a much smaller job.

Even before step three, notifications from an installed web app already show up on a paired Apple Watch.

Pay once, not three times

Built the wrong way, each step means starting again. Built the right way, each step reuses everything that came before. That is the difference between paying for your app once and paying for it three times.

Stop sitting on the idea

The costly part of an app was never the idea. It was building it twice, before knowing whether anyone would use it. A web app on the right engine lets you launch sooner, learn faster and move into the app stores when it makes sense.
